Chateau Picoron is a small, independent vineyard located in the small village of Sainte-Colombe just outside of Bordeaux in France. Savage Vines is proud to be importing Chateau Picoron wines in the UK. Owned by an Australian family, we first met the Kalyk’s in 2020 and were impressed by their flair for innovation, focus on environmental sustainability and most importantly high quality wines. Read below to find out more about Chateau Picoron wine, their vineyards and some of the different styles of wine they produce.

Where is Chateau Picoron?

Chateau Picoron is located 30 miles east of Bordeaux in the town of Sainte-Columbe in France. Its neighbours are the world renowned villages of Saint Emilion and Pomerol which make some of the most stunning red wines in the world. The easiest way to get to Chateau Picoron is to fly into Bordeaux Airport (airport code: BOD) and hire a car. We recommend having access to a car whilst visiting Bordeaux as you will want to visit multiple vineyards and they are not within walking distance of one another. The other option is to join an organised tour with either Bordeaux Wine Trails or Decanter Tours who are professional operators.

What Type of Wine Does Chateau Picoron Produce?

Chateau Picoron produce Merlot grapes on a little over 4.5 hectares of vines on gently sloping clay-chalk soil. Given they are only farming Merlot, you’re forgiven for assuming they are only produce red wines. However, this is one of the things which we liked about Chateau Picoron wine. Their modern approach to winemaking has led them to produce both red, white and rosé wines all from Merlot grapes. Have you ever tried a white wine from Bordeaux made from 100% Merlot grapes? Traditionally, white wines from the Bordeaux wine region are made from Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon or a blend of both. This is another reason you should expand your horizons and try some Chateau Picoron wine.

Accommodation at Chateau Picoron

Another thing we like about Chateau Picoron is they have accommodation for up to 6 people nestled amongst the vineyards along with a 25 metre heated pool. The Chateau was purchased by Frank and Glenda Kalyk in 2015 and they quickly converted the old pool house which overlooks the vines into some chic, self-contained accommodation. Spend an evening by the pool, having a BBQ and drinking some wine after exploring the vineyards of Bordeaux during the day. It doesn’t get much better than this. You can book the pool house on Air BnB here.
