A traditional red wine from Spanish D.O. Riberio in the north west of Spain, just above Portugal. Mencia was nearly an extinct grape variety 25 years ago until it was rejuvenated by a younger generation of winemakers looking to produce different and interesting wines. Mencia can be blended with other red grapes in the region like Grenache however on its own makes a wine full of juicy red and black fruit with an abundance of character.
Expect lots of raspberry, blackberry, plum and fig which is followed by sweet baking spices to finish it off. Antonio Montero is the winemaker and he is making excellent quality wines in Galicia, which borders Portugal. Deep purple tones in the glass, the wine will pair extremely well with a sausage casserole or slow cooked lamb.
