Mulled Wine | 20 Minutes

It’s that time of year, the smell of cinnamon is in the air and if you’ve stopped by a Christmas market, you’ll likely have indulged in a piping hot mug of mulled wine.
  • Prep & Cooking Time – 20mins
  • Serves – 4 People
  • Level – Easy
  • 1 x 750ml Bottle of Red Wine
  • 100ml Brandy
  • 3 x Cinnamon Sticks
  • 3 x Star Anise
  • 6 x Whole Cloves
  • 1 x Orange (Sliced into Rounds)
  • 50ml Honey
  • Step 1

Let’s take you through how to make mulled wine. Red wine is combined with spices, orange, cinnamon sticks, honey and brandy to create a delightfully boozy winter warmer that dates back to Ancient Rome.

First, in a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine all ingredients. Bring to a simmer, (not a boil), then reduce the heat to medium-low.

  • Step 2

Let this simmer, (don’t boil it), for around 10 minutes.

  • Step 3
    • Serve warm and garnish with the cinnamon, orange and star anise. You can take the cloves and poke them into the rind of the orange to add a bit of flair.

That’s it – everything you need to know how to make mulled wine. You can play with these measurements as well. If you’re adverse to brandy, or don’t want the heavy booze, then brandy can be left out. Want a bit more booze, then add a touch more brandy. Maybe you want to play up the spice, then a few more cinnamon sticks and star anise could do the trick. Got a sweet tooth? Add more honey. Find the ratios that work for you!

In terms of the structure of the wine, you want to look for fairly high alcohol, fruit flavours and a good amount of tannin. Think Merlot, Tempranillo and Grenache. These are all easy to come by and do the trick nicely. You can browse our suggestions here.
